Oxycontin Addiction

OxyContin® detox is the treatment for addiction to OxyContin®, the brand name for the time-release formula of oxycodone, a narcotic analgesic for moderate to severe pain. OxyContin®, which comes in liquid and tablet forms, is used to treat terminally ill cancer patients and chronic pain sufferers as well as relieving postpartum, postoperative and dental pain. However, when the tablets are broken, the time-release mechanism is nullified and the full effects of the drug hit the user quickly. Oxycodone, which can be habit-forming, is an opium derivative and also the active ingredient in the painkillers Percodan® and Percocet®. OxyContin® binds to the pain receptors in the brain so that the sensation of pain is reduced. Since the drug can be habit forming, care must be taken to follow the doctor's instructions when taking OxyContin®. Do not take a larger dose, or take it more frequently, or take it for longer than the doctor has prescribed.

Treating OxyContin dependency - Detox Methods

Since oxycodone’s FDA approval in 1995, the illegal use of OxyContin® has increased significantly, and recent OxyContin-related deaths have attracted media attention. OxyContin® detox can be difficult because the drug falls into the opiate category (naturally occurring constituents of opium), causing both mental and physical addiction. Opiates travel rapidly through the bloodstream to the brain, where they stimulate opiate receptors, triggering intense feelings of pleasure and reward. This quick high is followed a state of relaxation and contentment that lasts for several hours. Concurrently, opiates act directly on the respiratory center in the brainstem, causing a decrease in the breathing rate of the user. When OxyContin® and/or other opiate-derivative drugs are used incorrectly, this breathing slow-down can be dangerous and even fatal.

OxyContin detox methods traditionally have focused on talk therapy, the psychological aspects of addiction and treatment for the often unbearable symptoms of withdrawal. The rate of success with traditional methods, however, has been low.

A newer and quicker method of OxyContin® detox is Accelerated Neuro-Regulation (ANR), a rapid drug treatment that is being used with increasing success for opiate dependency. ANR (formerly rapid detox), also known as the Waismann Methodsm, treats OxyContin® addiction as a physical disease that can be overcome with advanced medical techniques. ANR eliminates the cravings that often accompany traditional opiate detox treatments. The Waismann Methodsm has been clinically proven to be effective for OxyContin® addiction. In fact, ANR clinics have reported success rates of nearly 64% in treating a variety of opiate addictions, including OxyContin® addiction.
